This kiln was built during my degree at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design. It is around eight feet long and contained a single step up from the firebox into the 3ft packing chamber and a step down into the exit flue. The entire kiln was built below ground level to make use of the available space and to save on the amount of bricks used. The roof was created from a double layer of kiln shelves and ceramic fibre blanket. The firing had to be fitted around the universities opening hours so it had a pre-heat with gas to around 500˚C and then was fired the rest of the way on wood. | ||
